Struck Dumb

Scrawled Notes

I have been laid low by my first cold in years – which I could have coped with – but it turned into laryngitis.  I don’t know that I’ve ever had such a hideously painful throat in my life before but my memory’s got further and further back to go these days so I can’t swear to it.   OMG – the pain was excruciating.  So much so that I – who have a phobia of being anywhere near a hospital – nearly took myself off to A & E on Sunday morning as swallowing was so painful and as I was trying to cough at the same time I thought it would cut off my breathing.  As is clear, I am still here but have been silent since Saturday morning.  Mr. T. had always fantasized about such a thing but was soon disabused of the notion it might be ‘a good thing’ when I was unable to answer requests, questions, commands, etc. yelled from the other side of the house but could remain serenely silent and await the yeller – being Mr. T himself or Mlle. T. the younger – to actually approach me and speak in measured tones.  Then, the waiting game began whilst I scrawled my replies on a block of notes which finally became useful after years of perching on the edge of the desk.  It transpired that, over time, where my handwriting has been abandoned in favour of the keyboard, it is now almost illegible.  There followed scenes of what would have been hilarity if I’d been up to laughing, where husband and daughter tried to make sense of my scribble in a desperate attempt to communicate with me.  I think I might actually try it again one day when I’m only pretending so that I can sit back and enjoy the show.

Quilt as You Go Joining Progress

In an effort to take my mind off the throat that seemed to have taken over my whole body and made it all hurt – I decided to press on with joining my F2F Block Swap quilt together and, encouraged by Kate, who is also joining one up with the quilt as you go method, and the fact that I sort of realised I’d quite like to present this to the husband for Christmas, I started cutting up the strips.  I won’t bore you with the strips put on upside down, the not catching the binding in at the back first time round and all the other little mistakes I made in my Paracetemol/Ibuprofen Alternating state of mind but, suffice it to say, it didn’t go well at first.  However, here are the top and bottom corners of the quilt, laid side by side for ease of  ‘fit in photograph’ and now I have the right side to do which will consist of two sections of 3 blocks across x 3 blocks down.  Then, there will only be one long vertical strip to sew down between the left and right hand sides and I will have a 5 x 6 block sized, husband sleeping on his own in London (at least he better be!) sized quilt.  Kate was thinking that this method would avoid the necessity of doing long strips between each completed row and, so far, it seems to be a good idea.  Kate explains it much better here should you be interested in going down this path yourself.

A Handmade Bauble

Then this came in the post and I was very touched by it as Claire is always making little impromptu gifts for people and sending them out to them and it’s almost as if she knew I was in need of a bit of TLC. So germ infested hugs and kisses to you Claire for such a lovely thought  – your timing was perfect.

and finally……..

I love this ad from Poland which is really sweet and funny, encouraging for a post-Brexit Britain and so in the spirit of Christmas so, if you haven’t seen it yet, enjoy!

I’m off to drink more honey and lemon in hot water – I’m almost up to adding a tot of something stronger in it but I’ll wait until after 6.

hope your throat feels better soon.
So pleased to see you’ve started work on the F2F2 quilt already – I do believe you’ll be the first one to finish and I’m still waiting patiently for my turn lol.
Loved the video of the Polish grandpa – especially the scènes in the bath with rubber duck!
And you’re welcome regarding the card & tree decoration. I don’t know if you’ll be putting up a tree this year, with all those cats, but it would make a nice earring lol.

I’ve had those individual blocks quilted for some time now – and had the fabric for the strips so I really just needed a shove to get on with it which Kate kindly gave me 😉
We have the biggest ‘real’ tree we can find every year and, so far, it has never been felled by dog or cat although the cats are not allowed unfettered access inside the house so are usually supervised or in the conservatory which is their sort of inside/but not totally inside home. The little felt heart will be hanging on one of the branches. x

I have to say that I wasn’t feeling very humorous through the worst of the pain but, now I’m mostly out the other side I can, as my mother would say, ‘look back and laugh about it’.
I don’t know that blog – I’ll pop over and have a look.

You crack me up! Hope you’re back to your old self very soon and not relying on scribbled notes (although I had no problem reading them at all….shall I apply to be your interpreter?). Love your quilt, and love the Polish grandpa-laughed at the bathtub scene and ended up crying. Such a sap. 😉

    • #6 by tialys on December 7, 2016 - 20:49

The writing in the photograph shows mostly individual questions or replies. It was when we were trying to have a conversation – half spoken, half written – that the pen was flying and the words became mush.
I love the bath scene. I had to search to find a version they hadn’t beeped out the swear word because it’s funnier when it’s in. I cried too and I like to think I have a hard heart :/

      • #7 by jendavismiller on December 11, 2016 - 16:04

I trust you’re back to normal now, with no more conversation mush!
As to your hard heart. Pshaw…..we all know better. 😉

Ouch you poor thing. Whiskey honey and lemon should do the trick! Love the quilt!

    • #9 by tialys on December 7, 2016 - 20:51

It will be a good use for our seemingly endless supply of whiskey – good stuff too. For some reason, years ago when they still deigned to visit us, my In-Laws got it into their heads that I liked malt whisk(e)y (see, I don’t even know how to spell it – isn’t one Irish and one Scottish or something?) and I didn’t have the heart to put them right. It might give me a good night’s sleep tonight.

Sorry for your pain but you made me smile imagining the episodes of communication in your house. I didn’t have any trouble reading your notes either – because our handwriting has deteriorated all across the board? I hope you won’t be suffering much longer. Good job with the quilt (in spite of setbacks!).

    • #11 by tialys on December 7, 2016 - 20:51

Yes, I must finish it now otherwise Kate will be on to me and I hate to disappoint.

Get well soon. That ad offered more than most this year – including the language – but I wanted more of a payoff. In the end I had no clue what it was advertising too!

    • #13 by tialys on December 7, 2016 - 20:55

Me neither but it had a dog, a rubber duck, a sweet old gent, a snowy London street (in the posh part of town!) and a nicely placed swear word so I didn’t care – it’s for something Polish anyway so we can’t have it whatever it is 😉

Nothing at all wrong with your fingers, either on the keyboard or at the sewing machine! I hope the last remnants of the affliction are now passing and your dulcet tones are now echoing around Chateau Tialys once more…

  8. #15 by themateriallady on December 7, 2016 - 22:33

Poor you. I hope you are feeling better than before now. (Though I would stay silent and enjoy the performance for a bit longer 😂).
That polish grandpa was just gorgeous. As you said – dog, rubber duck, bad language – what more could you want!

    • #16 by tialys on December 8, 2016 - 09:24

Although I can now speak, my voice doesn’t hold out for long and generally results in a nasty coughing fit so I’ve got a good excuse.

I always thought laryngitis was a bit of fun as you get to talk in a sexy Mariella Frostrup voice for a few days (my kids always suspect I’m putting it on) but your afflictiont sounds the pits. I very much hope the worst is well and truly over.

That lovely grandpa (and his dog) made me cry. Thanks for the early Christmas treat.

    • #18 by tialys on December 8, 2016 - 09:21

Yes, I’ve had that type and it’s always been at the tail end of a cold and comes without pain – I would prefer that next time. Mr. T has texted to say he’s now got ‘my cold’ and, if he has, it will of course be worse than mine was so we’ll see when he gets home tonight 😦

I do hope the lurgy has moved on. When I taught I actually enjoyed having laryngitis, although I never had the really painful throat that yours was. I had to take time off because a teacher can’t teach without her voice, but I usually felt okay and could get non-teaching things done. I love the Grandpa video. The bath scene was fabulous, but so was the scene on the bus when he says “I love you”!

    • #20 by tialys on December 8, 2016 - 09:17

It is moving on, albeit slowly, thanks Anne. Laryngitis without pain is quite fun – I’ve had that – but this time it was no fun at all.

The quilt looks so lovely! I hope that your throat heals well, not being able to talk is the worst!

  12. #23 by dezertsuz on December 9, 2016 - 05:54

I LOVE your quilt blocks! I LOVE that ad! I HATE that you were so miserable and I hope you are never so sick again.

    • #24 by tialys on December 9, 2016 - 10:15

Thank you Susan. I always feel a bit guilty when I moan about feeling ill during something so mundane when I think of what some people have to suffer. Still, if you didn’t feel sorry for yourself from time to time you wouldn’t be human would you?

  13. #25 by PendleStitches on December 9, 2016 - 19:59

Hope you’re feeling better! That sounds awful.
That is just the most beautiful advert…thanks for sharing.

    • #26 by tialys on December 9, 2016 - 20:34

Thank you so much – feeling a lot better now, almost back to normal!
I’m glad you liked the ad, I came across it by accident and thought it would give people a bit of a glow.

      • #27 by PendleStitches on December 16, 2016 - 20:30

I’m so slow with commenting/replying at the moment, so I’m hoping you’re back up to full speed again now. x

      • #28 by tialys on December 17, 2016 - 10:29

No worries – a new house, young kids with Christmas coming up – you’re excused 😉
        I’m much better thank you.

      • #29 by PendleStitches on December 19, 2016 - 10:26

        Good to hear!

I’m glad to hear that you’re over the worst of it and admire the fact you kept your sense of humour in your notes – “I don’t know, or care”!! The scene in the bathtub, I think we all agree was hilarious and unexpected! What a lovely advert – it brought a lump to my throat:)

Oh poor you! I hope that by now you are well on the mend x
