I found this little mini bellows and wondered what it could possibly be for.
There is obviously supposed to be some sort of product inside which is then puffed out by means of the bellows. But what?
At first we thought it might have been a wig powderer but it didn’t seem nearly ornate enough for that.
Then we found some old garden tool sites on the internet and it appears that gardeners used these little bellows to administer products like pyrethrum and derris dust on to the vines and other plants to protect against pests and disease. This would explain the fairly basic construction. This is not the original bung but the leather bellows are still intact and, considering they must be around 100 years old, I don’t think that’s bad going.
