I used to make little rabbit bento bags from a Japanese pattern which I made in linen and lined them with Liberty of London fabric. I got the pattern from a Japanese book which was mad to work out and they were fiddly and expensive to make. That post (and the one it links to) however, are still probably the most commonly read ones I’ve ever written.
So, when my Wednesday sewing buddy, Sandra, showed me a much simpler one in one of her (French) magazines, we made it a project for our sewing sessions for two or three weeks – well, we chat for most of the time otherwise it would have probably only taken one session.
These are far less fiddly, larger and quicker to make all round.
They make good small project baskets.
I’m not sure they’re quite as cute though.
Even though they are much more practical.
I’m joining in Kate and Gun’s ScrapHappy day because, although they are fairly large scraps, the linen and lining are left over from other projects and not new.
(I mean the fabrics are fairly large scraps, not Kate and Gun 😉 )

Instead of the petite Japanese bunnies, these lovely bags are practical, larger Euro-bunnies, with larger European noses, I feel. I might have to try and work out how to make one for myself…

I think a bit of a combination might be in order if I make another one but, certainly, the size of the lapin is more useful unless you are a tot as the Japanese one is perfect for little hands.

I got to see your Japanese bunny bags in person before I gifted them and I actually like the lack of pleat on the French version. I like the sewn eyes too! Nose wise I think I prefer the petite one from the Japanese pattern but I’m sure kids would prefer the more expressive one.

It’s certainly less fiddly to make them without the elastic but I still think the little ones are cuter and I would embroider the nose if I make another ‘French’ one.

Ooh, that was August 2018. They are cute aren’t they? I gave the larger one to my niece when she had her baby girl to keep baby ‘stuff’ in. I ought to make some more really. Maybe one of these days…….
