Scraphappy Rabbit Basket

I used to make little rabbit bento bags from a Japanese pattern which I made in linen and lined them with Liberty of London fabric.  I got the pattern from a Japanese book which was mad to work out and they were fiddly and expensive to make.  That post (and the one it links to)  however, are still probably the most commonly read ones I’ve ever written.

So, when my Wednesday sewing buddy, Sandra, showed me a much simpler one in one of her (French) magazines, we made it a project for our sewing sessions for two or three weeks – well, we chat for most of the time otherwise it would have probably only taken one session.

These are far less fiddly, larger and quicker to make all round.

They make good small project baskets.

I’m not sure they’re quite as cute though.

Even though they are much more practical.

I’m joining in Kate and Gun’s ScrapHappy day because, although they are fairly large scraps, the linen and lining are left over from other projects and not new.

(I mean the fabrics are fairly large scraps, not Kate and Gun 😉 )

Have a look at Kate’s post for a list of all the participants and, if you like making things from scraps (doesn’t have to be fabric) we’d love for you to join us.

I think they are just as cute, and very pretty.

Thanks Cathy – I call it making rabbits while we rabbit.

    Very cute 🙂

Thanks Margaret – you’ve probably had your fill of bunnies and hares for a while though haven’t you 😉

Instead of the petite Japanese bunnies, these lovely bags are practical, larger Euro-bunnies, with larger European noses, I feel. I might have to try and work out how to make one for myself…

How’s your French? (Probably good knowing you 😉 I could send you the magazine.

      • #7 by katechiconi on August 16, 2018 - 12:46

My French ought to be adequate for that, if you can be bothered. Could you scan and email instead, to save the postage?

      • #8 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 12:57

        Will do.

I think these are very cute and practical! Everyone should have a bunny bag!! ❤

    • #10 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:25

‘Bunny Bag’ – it even sounds good 🙂

  5. #11 by claire93 on August 15, 2018 - 10:44

well I personally prefer the faces on these French bunny bags and think they look even cuter than their Japanese counterparts lol. Call me biased though.

    • #12 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:24

Well, you and I know that our ideas of ‘cuteness’ vary somewhat but if everybody liked the same thing the crafting world would be a very boring place.

      • #13 by claire93 on August 16, 2018 - 11:41

        very true

I agree with everyone else… lapins all the way!

    • #15 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:23

I think a bit of a combination might be in order if I make another one but, certainly, the size of the lapin is more useful unless you are a tot as the Japanese one is perfect for little hands.

All equally appealing to my eyes! It’s such clever idea.

    • #17 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:21

It’s very convenient that bunnies have those long ears so us sewing types can make them into handles 😉

I got to see your Japanese bunny bags in person before I gifted them and I actually like the lack of pleat on the French version. I like the sewn eyes too! Nose wise I think I prefer the petite one from the Japanese pattern but I’m sure kids would prefer the more expressive one.

    • #19 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:18

It’s certainly less fiddly to make them without the elastic but I still think the little ones are cuter and I would embroider the nose if I make another ‘French’ one.

I like the bigger one, but the face on the little might be cuter, maybe a combo is in order!

    • #21 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:15

I think you might be right – I prefer the embroidered nose.

  10. #22 by Kim on August 15, 2018 - 16:13

    I think they are lovely!

    • #23 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:15

Thanks Kim – we like to amuse ourselves while we chat 🙂

  11. #24 by Connie Butner on August 15, 2018 - 16:50

I think both are really cute! I do agree that the larger one would be more useful.

    • #25 by tialys on August 16, 2018 - 11:14

I’ve already got a little crochet project in the larger one – I think the petite Japanese ones make pretty baskets for little girls.

Love these, they’d make cute gift bags too and using scraps cheaper than the bought paper ones 😍

    • #27 by tialys on August 17, 2018 - 09:18

I do love a gift bag that can be part of the gift!

  13. #28 by Catherine on August 17, 2018 - 10:15

These are great bags! Very cute and practical. I think I need to make some!

    • #29 by tialys on August 17, 2018 - 18:13

      Another project! 🙂

  14. #30 by Emma on August 20, 2018 - 02:56

I think that they look just as cute as the Japanese ones 🙂 and the bigger size is a win for me

    • #31 by tialys on August 20, 2018 - 08:55

I think, in this poll of ‘cuteness’, the French have come out on top.

I love these – and the ones without the buttons are my favourites (the button ones are tad scary!!)

    • #33 by tialys on October 7, 2018 - 12:12

      Scary bunnies?
I sort of see what you mean but my embroidery skills aren’t up to much so, sometimes, I resort to the button option.

I was browsing and saw this post from August – oh my what lovely bunnies!!

    • #35 by tialys on January 15, 2020 - 23:24

Ooh, that was August 2018. They are cute aren’t they? I gave the larger one to my niece when she had her baby girl to keep baby ‘stuff’ in. I ought to make some more really. Maybe one of these days…….
